InterStim® Sacral Nerve Stimulation Therapy: What is it and how does it prevent urinary incontinence?

InterStim® is a therapy that stimulates the sacral nerve so that you can regain bladder and bowel control. InterStim® is a small device that is placed near the pelvis to stop an overactive bladder. The device sends stimulating pulses to the sacral nerve to help control it.

The sacral nerves are the nerves that control your bowels and your bladder. The device is made up of lead attached to a neurostimulator that works to restore neural activity to the sacral nerve. This allows for your brain and bladder to be in sync which will result in better urinary function.

The InterStim® system is:

  • Reversible
  • Conducted with a small device
  • Designed to send electrical impulses to the sacral nerves
  • Capable of lessening or stopping incontinence and other bladder related issues
  • Inserted during a minimally invasive procedure under anesthesia

Am I a Candidate for InterStim® Sacral Nerve Stimulation Therapy?

InterStim® is not for everybody but a few signs that you are a candidate include:

  • You have an overactive bladder
  • You have urinary incontinence
  • You have tried other treatments and have yet to find something that works
  • You do not have an obstruction like BPH, cancer, or a urethral stricture

Before becoming a candidate for the InterStimⓇ system you may be asked to try medication or therapy. You will also need to be evaluated and tested to make sure that you will benefit.
